About KeyCode Finder

KeyCode Finder is a free online tool that detects keyboard events in real time and provides a complete key code reference table.

It captures keyboard events and displays full event properties including event.key, event.code, event.keyCode, event.location, and modifier states. A categorized key code reference table is included with search, filtering, and one-click copy. Everything runs locally in your browser — no data is sent to any server.

Features

  • Real-time keyboard event detection with full property display
  • Complete key code reference table grouped into 10 categories
  • Search and filter to quickly find target keys
  • One-click copy of key code values

How to Use

  1. 1Click the detector area on the left, then press any key
  2. 2View detected key event properties
  3. 3Search or browse key codes in the reference table on the right
  4. 4Click a cell to copy its key code value

FAQ

What is the difference between event.key and event.code?
event.key returns the character value of the key pressed (e.g., 'a', '1', 'Enter') and is affected by input method and keyboard layout. event.code returns the physical key position (e.g., 'KeyA', 'Digit1') and remains the same regardless of keyboard layout.
keyCode is deprecated — why still use it?
Although keyCode has been deprecated by the W3C standard, many legacy codebases and older systems still rely on it. This tool provides keyCode values primarily for compatibility and debugging purposes.
Why is the keyCode value 0 for some keys?
Some special keys (such as IntlRo, IntlYen) may have a keyCode of 0 or undefined in different browsers and operating systems. This is normal behavior. It is recommended to use event.code as the primary key identifier.
Does the detector support combination keys?
Yes. The detector displays modifier key states (Ctrl, Alt, Shift, Meta) and the repeat flag simultaneously. However, each keydown event fires for a single key, so combination keys trigger sequentially.
Does this tool compromise my privacy?
Not at all. All key detection and code lookup happens entirely in your browser. No data is uploaded to any server, and no keystroke records are stored.
